Currently, you can use the Disney Genie service to get you through the queues faster with Lightning Lane entrances. However, Genie+ can no longer be pre-purchased– though you can still purchase through the app when you visit the park. Your boat will pull up with your guide at the helm when it’s your turn. There are 15 boats in rotation, each with its memorable name (like Wamba Wanda).
Dining on the Disney Skyliner
For putting together your day at the park, we have a One Day Plan for Magic Kingdom. Let Disney Genie service summon the attractions, entertainment and dining you love most. The boat passes by a beach with a shop named "Boats & Baits and Bites", and then passes an African rock python. The boat then passes a camp that has been raided by western lowland gorillas, which transitions the cruise into the Nile River. Next, Imagineering has released a 1938 issue of The Daily Gnus about Alberta Falls and the World-Famous Jungle Cruise to tease the upcoming project. There are fun tidbits in there that reflect how Imagineering will be expanding the Jungle Cruise’s backstory.
Boats
After winding through the queue, guests board one of the boats and meet their skipper who speaks either English, Cantonese, or Mandarin, to accompany the park's guests who speak many different languages themselves. The first installation of the ride was featured at Disneyland for its grand opening in 1955. A variety of changes were made over the years, including enhanced audio effects, updates to the storyline, and the removal of culturally-sensitive material.
Tips for enjoying the Jungle Cruise Disney World
The vessels then drift into a small pool where a pod of hippos try to tip the boat. Several feet ahead a rhino is seen chasing a safari group up a tree while several hyenas look on laughing. In this scene, Trader Sam is betting on an established reputation as the best merchant in the jungle, and while he’s out lost and finding some new inventory, the animals are getting the last laugh and “reclaiming” the jungle. It’s on-brand with the Jungle Cruise humor and self-deprecating, as Disney pokes fun at its commercialism and opportunism with rides exiting into gift shops. The Jungle Cruise, a flagship attraction at both Disneyland and Disney World, offers guests a whimsical voyage through exotic landscapes filled with animatronic animals and engaging skippers. In addition to the animatronic animals and special effects, the Jungle Cruise is known for its witty and humorous skippers.
Disney announced in January 2021 that it planned to update the Jungle Cruise with new additions to add "more humor, wildlife and skipper heart – and also reflect and value the diversity of the world around us." To the contrary, our view is that Jungle Cruise is way too taste-specific and skipper-dependent. It has a cult following among longtime fans and has achieved iconic status via longevity, but doesn’t have as much mainstream appeal. While that’s obviously not the impetus for these changes, we’re cautiously optimistic about anything that makes the attraction more coherent, consistent, and enjoyable to first-timers. Above is concept art for the replacement scene, where Trader Sam has opportunistically “reimagined” lost & found as a gift shop as a quick and easy way to make some extra cash from tourists.
Top cast
To be honest, I’m not totally sure why Jungle Cruise is as popular as it is. Based on guests I’ve seen when I (pretty frequently) ride it, I assume many casual guests are expecting something a little different. If you lean into the pun-centric humor, the experience is a fun one, but the hard product—the animal animatronics etc.—really isn’t top tier. If you have Genie+, Jungle Cruise is a good use of your first Genie+ pick as it has become one of the most popular rides in the park.
Disney Cruise Line – What You Need to Know

We believe you can have an incredible time at the resorts without ever setting foot in a theme park. We live near the parks and visit weekly and would love for you to follow along. As the sign indicates, you’ll board a jungle boat to travel exotic rivers of the world, guided by a witty and experienced Skipper. During the holidays, Jungle Cruise receives a holiday overlay and becomes the “Jingle Cruise.” The ride format stays basically the same with the addition of fun holiday-themed jokes and pretty seasonal decorations. However, keep in mind some of the animals on the cruise are very realistic and may scare little ones. There is also a short scene in which the boat rides through a very dark, almost pitch-black cave with several animatronic snakes and tigers that could be scary for children.
The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day. It’s on the left side of the land, immediately past Swiss Family Treehouse.

It appears that the skippers made cheap yet heartful changes to the boats for the holiday spirit. In Disneyland Park, you’ll find a two-tier queue next to the Tropical Hideaway watering hole as you pass into Adventureland. But don’t worry, both queues are fully accessible and Jungle Cruise Skippers will meet you at the front of the queue entrance to assist you on your watery safari.
Jungle Cruise has a standby entrance and an individual Lightning Lane queue. This attraction often has long lines that build fairly early in the day. The original script for Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise was written by Winston Hibler and inspired by Disney’s True-Life Adventure African Lion film. This gave the ride its more serious and educational tone, but that all changed in the ’60s when Imagineer Marc Davis took over and turned the ride into what many know and love today. They can be left in the designated area near the attraction entrance or with a non-rider. Trust us when we say to fully experience this ride, you need to try it yourself because the Skippers add a whole new level to each attraction scene.
Bill Evans was tasked with creating a jungle within the park on a budget. To achieve this, he used a mix of tropical plants and plants that appeared to be tropical (but were actually local). A few scenes of Jungle Cruise have been changed over the years, and as part of implementing their Fifth Key—Inclusion—Disney has made more changes in the last year or so. This post is a quick guide to Jungle Cruise, but we have related content that dives deeper into topics. Our Magic Kingdom Genie+ and Lightning Lane post covers Lightning Lane strategy in deep. The Magic Kingdom Rides and Entertainment Guide gives brief introductions to all the park’s offerings.
Each skipper has their own style and personality, and they are trained to deliver clever jokes and puns throughout the ride. Created in 2005, what started as a tiny central Florida-based website and short weekly podcast that allowed our audience to visit Walt Disney World virtually has grown into the publishing company it is today. We focus on bringing you all things fun so you can plan your theme park vacation, enjoy Disney at home, and more. Disney’s Jungle Cruise movie was filmed in Hawaii and Atlanta, GA in the summer and fall of 2018, but the film’s release has been delayed until 2021. The film will star Dwyane Johnson as Skipper Frank Wolff, and Emily Blunt as Lily.
Up ahead several crocodiles are seen resting on a small beach, while a school of hungry piranha are jumping in the hopes of attacking the guests. The boats escape into Africa and pass a large safari camp where several curious gorillas have discovered clothes, guns, hammocks, and books, as the "Trashin’ the Camp" song from Tarzan plays on a nearby 1930s radio. The African Veldt comes into view, where antelope, giraffes, zebras, and African elephants stare at the boats.
Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions. As you set sail, you’ll notice that things have gone awry, including your Skipper’s jokes. Each boat comes equipped with a Jungle Skipper escort whose sole purpose is to share terrible jokes throughout the journey. Jungle Cruise’s boats are slow-moving and don’t have any fast turns, so motion sickness seems very unlikely. Feel free to check out our guide on motion sickness that’s filled with additional information and tips.
In January 2021, Disney announced that some much-needed changes were coming to the Jungle Cruise on both coasts. Ironically, before becoming known for its laughs and silly jokes, the attraction as a whole was initially more of a serious tone with only a few jokes inserted here and there. Anyone riding with kids may want to tell them the animals aren’t real prior to riding. You will pass by your Skippers pet python snake and a camp being broken down by Gorillas. You’ll want to speak with a Cast Member at the attraction entrance (at the top of the path that leads to the attraction) for details and directions.
